Westside Youth Development Program
The Westside Youth Development Program is located at the Sheila Jennings Recreation Center in the Westside Community. The Y Westside Youth Development Program is operated through a partnership with James A. Henry Y, the United Way, the Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department, the Chattanooga Housing Authority and the Hamilton County School System. The Program consists of afterschool, day camp, and some sports program. As it “takes a village to raise a child” a number of outreach efforts are operated in sync with the youth programs including: tutoring by students from Baylor, dental care, Bible Studies and much more.
Afterschool
The Afterschool program serves youth who live in the Westside Community in grades K-5.
The Afterschool program consists of:
- Devotions
- Homework Assistance
- Physical Fitness
- Arts and Crafts
- Daily healthy snack and meal are provided.
Typical Schedule
3:25 - 4:00 Snacks
4:00 – 4:20 Physical Fitness with Mobile Fit
4:20 – 5:00 Homework
5:00 – 5:30 Enrichment
5:30 – 6:00 Snack and Physical Fitness – Group Choice
Day Camp:
The Westside Youth Development program offers a safe and nurturing environment for youth to build lasting relationships and fond memories while receiving academic enrichment during the long days of summer.
Day Camp consists of:
- Devotions
- Character Development
- Physical Fitness Activity
- Healthy snack and meals
- Academic Enrichment
- Arts and Crafts
- Field Trips
A typical day:
9:00 – 9:30 Opening Ceremony
9:30 – 12:00: Academic Enrichment, Physical Fitness, Arts and Crafts and Games
12:00 – 1:00 Lunch & Games
1:00 – 4:00 Swimming & Field Trips
Age: Rising 1st-5thgraders (campers must have completed kindergarten).
Time: 9 a.m. -4 p.m.
What to Bring:
- Clothes that parents don’t mind getting dirty.
- Comfortable tennis shoes (sandals are not appropriate shoes)
- Water bottle
- Sunscreen
- Backpack
- Bag lunch that does not require refrigeration or heating (as neither are available)
- Healthy lunch and snack that does not require heating or refrigeration as neither is available.
- (Snacks and meals are provided, but many campers elect to bring their own.)
What not to bring:
- Valuables
- Cell Phones
- Electronic Devices
