The Mobile Meals inititative delivers meals to youth and teens 18 and younger at site-based locations. The goal is to eliminate the barrier of transportation that can often make it difficult for children to access daily, healthy and nutritious food.
In 2012, the North Georgia YMCA began a collaboration with YMCA of USA and United Way of Greater Chattanooga to help meet the growing need of childhood hunger in North Georgia communities. The YMCA became a sponsor of the USDA Summer Food Service Program, with a goal to serve a daily, healthy menu of lunch options during the weeks children are out of school. Over the years, the summer food program has expanded to reach nearly 20 locations in 5 North Georgia communities.
In the fall of 2014, the YMCA initiated a new program to ensure many Walker County students have sustainable meals on weekends and better prepare them for Monday morning classroom learning. The Backpack Blessings program, funded by the Walmart Foundation, partners with school leaders and community volunteers to provide bags of food discreetly to children in need before they are dismissed on Friday.
