YMCA Healthy Living Programs
Through programs like these below, the Y helps manage a range of health conditions. Regular exercise and healthy eating are a must, but creating a support group through difficult health journeys is invaluable.
The cost of Chronic Disease accounts for 95% of our nation's healthcare costs. In fact, one in two older adults has two or more health conditions. Take a look at more information regarding the impact of Chronic Disease and how the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga is making strides to combat and prevent these conditions.

Healthy Living = Healthy Heart
A Program for Cardiac Recovery Patients
Many cardiac patients need additional recovery supoort after their medically-supervised cardiac rehab program. This program, offered at the YMCA Healthy Living Center at North River, will help individuals gain and maintain long-term healthy lifestyle habits through physical fitness and healthy choices.
- Who: Cardiac patients who have completed their medically-supervised rehab program, or have had a recent cardiac episode.
- What: A 12-week program helping individuals transition into a community-based wellness center and provides ongoing support necessary for a successful recovery.
- When: Mondays and Wednesdays at 12 noon.
- Cost: $295 for members; $395 for non-members* (*Financial assistance and payment options are available).
YMCA BIOMETRIC SCREENINGS
The term is intimidating, but the process is not. A Biometric Screening is simply a blood test and a few basic body measurements such as height, weight, blood pressure, etc. This simple 20-minute screening is used to evaluate current health status fo rearly detection and intervention which leads to a healthier, longer life.
The results of the Biometric Evaluation are used to determine risk factors for disease, reveal existing conditions and give a snapshot of current health.
Screenings are offered at our Downtown, Hamilton, and Healthy Living Center at North River branches. The screenings are $30. For more information or to schedule a screening, contact Megan Vermeer.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the Y exists to help cancer survivors along their health journeys both physically and emotionally. It is a 12-week program designed for the period survivors go through between completing treatment and feeling strong enough to return to normal life. Learn more.

PEDALING FOR PARKINSON'S
Research has shown that physical activity can help alleviate some of the symptoms of this disease such as tremors, stiff muscles, slow movement, and trouble with balance or walking. This program is designed to improve the quality of life of Parkinson's patients and their caregivers. It also educates patients, caregivers and the public on the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle after a diagnosis.
Participants must be 30-75 years old; diagnosed with Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease; complete and provide a signed consent form and medical clearance.
Offered at the Healthy Living Center at North River, Hamilton, Cleveland and Downtown branches. It is free to members.

Rock Steady Boxing Chattanooga (RSBC) is a non-contact boxing based curriculum serving individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Through rigorous exercise, emphasizing gross motor movements, balance, core strength, and rhythm, RSBC is providing hope, enabling people with Parkinson’s disease to fight back and favorably impact their range of motion, gait, flexibility, posture, activities of daily living and overall quality of life.
Getting the right kind of exercise is part of the battle, but equally important are the social and emotional benefits people gain from Rock Steady. Our four levels of classes encourage intense exercise & functional fitness, as well as emotional and social support.
Currently offered at the Healthy Living Center at North River.

Nicole Berger, MSPT, Head Coach
Nicole is a licensed physical therapist with 20 years experience. She is certified in LSVT-BIG treatment for individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Rock Steady Boxing Chattanooga
MOVE WELL TODAY DIABETES PROGRAM
Evidence based Fitness Intervention designed to help manage diabetes and track changes in glucose levels and fitness parameters.
The program is designed for individuals diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and provides group instructions, supervision, and motivation.
Offered at the Healthy Living Center at North River branch. Cost is $200 for members; $300 for non-members. Now enrolling for a new class to start April 10 from 11:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m..
MATTER OF BALANCE
Many older adults experience a fear of falling which may cause them to limit activities, resulting in physical weakness--making the risk of falling even greater. This program designed for people ages 60 or older and includes eight two-hour sessions for a small group led by a trained facilitator. Participants will learn to view falls as controllable; set goals for increasing activity; make changes to reduce fall risk; exercise to increase strength and balance.
