Youth Leadership Chattanooga (YLC)

Students Today... Leaders Tomorrow

Youth Leadership Chattanooga (YLC) serves high school sophomores and juniors who show leadership abilities but who may not have the opportunity to reach that potential. The program challenges and sustains youth in developing:

•   The ability to provide effective and ethical leadership for Hamilton County,
An increased awareness of and appreciation for Hamilton County and its people,
The ability and desire to serve the needs of the community both now and in the future,
A strong bond with a diverse network of peers from throughout Hamilton County.

Each year a class of up to 40 students is selected to participate in the program which includes a beginning overnight retreat and continues throughout the year with eight daylong sessions that expose participants to a variety of issues and topics that will enhance their understanding of Hamilton County while developing the skills they will need for life-long leadership service.  These topics teach youth about their history and government, concepts of building community and citizenship, increase their appreciation for cultural diversity, develop essential leadership skills, and expose teens to career fields in our region.  Following graduation, students identify needs in the community and develop projects and personal goals to be pursued during their junior or senior years.

Nominations for the program are accepted in February and March for the next school year. Teachers, guidance counselors, neighbors, clergy, alumni or other non-family members can nominate students for the program. Candidates for selection must be currently enrolled as a high school freshman or sophomore and have at least a 2.0 grade point average. Individuals should also have a sincere interest in serving the community and demonstrate the potential for leadership.

Youth Leadership Chattanooga is provided to students at no charge. The program is funded by sponsorships from individuals, businesses and civic organizations in our community.

Over the past 13 years, Youth Leadership Chattanooga has graduated over 530 students with 95% of YLC graduates going on to higher education.

The Grace of Giving

Last year, the YMCA's YLC inspired outstanding high school students across the county and helped them chart a course for their future. Because Y members cared, these students' lives will never be the same. Make a difference in the lives of others by giving to the 2012 Strong Kids Campaign.
