Our Y Success Stories - You Can Help!

Did you know that for the first time in history, today's generation of children may have a shorter life span than their parents? What has brought on this dramatic and catastrophic change? Obesity. And currently, Tennessee has the third highest rate of childhood obesity in the nation.

In an effort to change the direction of health in our area, the North River Family YMCA offers many programs that aim to get members moving and more fit. Thanks to money given in last year's campaign, people of all ages and stages of life have started to overcome obesity on a daily basis.

With your contribution we will be able to offer a family that has been affected by the obesity crisis scholarship opportunities that open the door to better health.

See the Need

If every member of the North River Family YMCA gave this year to the Strong Kids Campaign, it would be easy to reach our goal of $45,000. But some are unable to give. That's why we are asking those who have been blessed with adequate resources to give so others may have better lives.

See the Transformation

Lisa, a single mother of three, needed assistance affording a Y membership for herself and for her children. Obesity issues have affected the whole family, and Lisa suffers from high blood pressure, bipolar disorder and leg problems. As a result, she can't maintain a full-time job. In addition, her doctor said if she did not lose weight, Lisa could be totally disabled for life. So she began swimming in the YMCA therapy pool with the arthritis class. She then asked a swim instructor to help her learn to swim better. Now Lisa swims laps every day and also uses the equipment in the wellness center. Her morning visits are for herself, and she swims with her children in the evenings. Since coming to the Y, she has spent quality time with her children while losing 65 pounds in less than a year. To give back, she campaigns for our Strong Kids Campaign and is an ambassador for our special events.

A military wife with three children, Tyceia is the only breadwinner in her house while her husband serves in Iraq. Though she got her family membership through the military, the military didn't cover the day camp fees for her two older children. Because she needed somewhere for them to go while she worked, the news that day camp wasn't covered brought her to tears. When we told her about camp scholarships, she was overwhelmed. Her girls attended camp every day and loved it. Tyceia's 14-year- old daughter even helped out at camp as a junior camp counselor. And it all happened because someone gave money that allowed the YMCA to provide a scholarship to a mother and wife whose husband is faithfully serving his country.

The Grace of Giving

Last year, the North River Family YMCA helped 6,921 people like Lisa and Tyceia. Because Y members cared, these members'lives will never be the same. Make a difference in the lives of others by giving to the 2011 Strong Kids Campaign. Contact the Y volunteer who gave you this information or stop by the welcome center at the North River Family YMCA and Aquatic Center.
