J. A. Henry Community YMCA
After over fifty years of community involvement, the James A. Henry Community YMCA has relocated in order to better serve Chattanooga families and communities. Located within the offices of the Downtown YMCA, the J.A. Henry Community YMCA seeks to enhance the lives of adults, youth, and children throughout Chattanooga with its many outreach programs within the local community.

James A. Henry
1859-1914
James A. Henry served in the Chattanooga Public School system for 29 years and was recognized throughout the South as one of the foremost African American educators. His advise in race relations and education was widely sought by people of all races who recognized him as one familiar with the needs of his people.
After graduating from Atlanta University, Professor Henry came to Chattanooga as an assistant teacher at Howard High in 1885 and held the post until his death in 1914
The James A. Henry School opened in 1937 was named in his honor. In 1953, the James A. Henry YMCA was established in honor of this outstanding Chattanooga educator.
