Geoff Young Awarded YMCA’s Highest Volunteer Honor
Chattanooga, TN (March 8, 2011) – The William D. Pettway, Jr. Memorial
Leadership Award is the YMCA’s most prestigious award, given to a past or present board member who exemplifies leadership and dedication to the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga. For 2010, the award was presented to Geoff Young, a YMCA member, board member and volunteer for over 30 years.
Mr Young has been an active community volunteer in Chattanooga for the last 40 years. A cum laude graduate of Princeton University, Mr. Young earned a J.D. degree from the Vermont Law School. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, State Bar of Georgia, the North Carolina State Bar and the Chattanooga Bar Association.
A longtime YMCA member, Mr. Young has served on the YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga Board since 1994 and was the Board Chair in 2008 and 2009. Over the years, he has also served on the boards of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, Fortwood Center, Girls, Inc., Memorial Healthcare System Foundation, Partnership for Families, Children and Adults and the Girl Scouts.
The award was presented at the YMCA’s 139th Annual Meeting at the Doubletree Hotel’s Vision Ballroom. Now celebrating 140 years of service in Chattanooga as the oldest social service organization in Chattanooga, YMCA is a not-for-profit organization which is volunteer-led and community-based.

Others recognized at the event were the chairs of each YMCA branch Strong Kids Annual Fund Campaign and outgoing branch board chairs. “We wish we could recognize every individual who volunteered for the Y in 2010. It’s impossible to measure the vast impact that they have,” said Mr. Brown. “Without those volunteers, the YMCA simply could not fulfill its mission.”
