For more than 100 years, the YMCA has been the worldwide leader in teaching people of all ages to feel safe in the water. Below is an overview of the various swim lessons available at the Y. Classes are 30-45 minutes in length.
PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS
Designed to introduce young children to an aquatics environment. An instructor will guide parents and children though simple skills and exercises that help infants and toddlers become more comfortable in the water. Children ages 6 months-36 months are accompanied by a parent or guardian. This introduction to the aquatic environment through songs and games, includes basic aquatic safety and water skills (kicking, breath control, body control, balance).
PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS
Student centered and based on age and ability of the participant. Children ages 3-5 years old are taught to experience the pool without parental assistance. Children are taught basic skills, as well as pool safety, boating safety, and the use of a personal flotation device (PFD). A child is advanced to the next level only when he or she can proficiently and safely perform the skills within his or her level.
YOUTH SWIM LESSONS
Designed for children ages 6-12 years old, this program comprises five key components: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, and rescue. Each skill level builds upon the preceding level, covering all the strokes, diving fundamentals, and safety skills necessary for your child to enjoy his or her time in the water.
TEEN SWIM LESSONS
Designed for individuals age 12 -17 who want to learn to swim or increase their knowledge of water safety. Objectives include assisting participants in water adjustment and learning or improving on rudimentary front crawl, back crawl, and paddle skills, and increasing endurance. A major focus is placed on individuals to meet and improve their personal swimming goals and abilities.
